  2.                     TROUBLE-SHOOTING GUIDE
  3. ==================================================================
  4.  
  5. NOTES:  GAMES WITH AN "*" WILL SAVE SCORE TO THE CD-ROM AND MAY
  6. CAUSE YOUR PC TO HANG.  SIMPLY RESET SYSTEM OR TURN POWER OFF.
  7. NO HARM WILL BE DONE TO YOUR SYSTEM.
  8.                                     
  9. 1.  Problems due to problematic CONFIG.SYS
  10. Symptoms: i.  Programs runs OK if run the batch files (.BAT) from
  11.               within the subdirectory of the program, but does NOT
  12.               run from MAGIC MENU, or
  13.          ii.  Programs does not run and return to MAGIC MENU.
  14. Suggestions:
  15. a.  Make sure your CONFIG.SYS has the following lines, especially
  16. if you load DOS high:
  17.     DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
  18.     DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
  19.     DOS=HIGH
  20.     
  21. 2.  Problem due to insufficient RAM to load program.
  22. Symptoms: i. "Not enough memory to load program"
  23.           ii.  Program does not run and return to MAGIC MENU 
  24. Suggestions:
  25. a.  Install more memory
  26. b.  Run MemMaker (from MS-DOS 6.x) to optimize your memory setting
  27. or use any memory manager to reconfigure your system.
  28. c.  Remove as many as non-essential drivers and TSR programs.
  29. d.  If running Windows programs, close as many Windows as possible.
  30.  
  31. 3.  Problems due to programs try writing to the CDROM.
  32. (CD is a READ-ONLY device, cannot be written to)
  33. Correction:  Some games need to update the highest score when you
  34. exit the game.  Your computer may hang or give an error message when
  35. the game tries writing to the CDROM.  Either ignore the error and 
  36. reset the system OR copy game to hard drive.
  37.  
  38. 4.  Certain games, especially the graphics-intensive ones, tends to 
  39. take a long time to load program into screen, WHY?  How to speed it up?
  40. Answer:  The access time of most single speed CD-ROM drive is about
  41. 350- 700ms (compare to hard drives' 10- 30ms), so it is a lot SLOWER
  42. when loading big games.  You may want to get a double-speed CD-ROM
  43. or install cache program that will speed up CD-ROM drive.  Note that
  44. not every cache program speeds up CDROM access time.
  45.  
  46. 5.  Some games runs fine on its existing settings, it freezes, hangs,
  47. or give a disk error or I/O error message when I try to change its
  48. setting.
  49. Answer:  Since CD is a READ-ONLY media, game settings that have been
  50. written onto it cannot be changed.  You get the above symptoms if you
  51. try to change it.  Either play the games as is OR copy it onto your
  52. hard disk, then you can change its setting without problem.
  53.  
  54. 6.  Program still freezes or gives "I/O error" or "Access Denied"
  55. messages even after I have copied program from CD-ROM to my 
  56. hard disk.
  57. Answer:  The file attribute of the programs is set to "R" (read-only)
  58. when they are copied to the CD-ROM.  You have copied these files
  59. with the "R" attribute.  If you don't remove the "R" attribute, your
  60. PC will not be able to write or update certain data files and give
  61. you I/O and access error messages. Run the following command 
  62. to remove the "R" attribute:
  63.        ATTRIB *.* -R /S
  64.  
  65. 7. How to figure out the playing commands?
  66. Answer: There are two ways:
  67. a.  Most programs has a help key, "F1" is the most popular one.
  68. The help key will give you command summary and other essential info.
  69. So look for the help key on your screen.  If no help key is found,
  70. see if you can found a cursor on screen.  You may control the cursor
  71. with arrow keys or mouse.  Then try out different buttons or choices.
  72. b.  Exit the program and manually log into the subdirectory in which
  73. the game resides.  Look for any file with .DOC or .TXT extension and
  74. read it with DOS's EDIT or the LIST, SEE utility (copies in the NOTES
  75. sub-directoy). Most games comes with instructions in the form of 
  76. README file, or README.TXT, or README.DOC, or MANUAL.TXT, or 
  77. MANUAL.DOC.  You can print out the instruction with EDIT (from DOS), 
  78. or SEE or LIST or your favorite word processor.
  79. For Windows programs, look for the files with .WRI extension, you
  80. can read it by simply "clicking" on the file.

  82. 8.  How to EXIT or get out of certain games and demo?
  83. Answer:  Some software authors are too lazy to write the exit routine.
  84. Most common commands to get out of a program are:
  85.    ESC       F10
  86.    CTRL-X;   CTRL-Q;  CTRL-U;  CTRL-Break; CTRL-ESC;  CTRL-PRINT SCREEN
  87.    ALT-X;    ALT-Q;   ALT-ESC
  88.    F10       CTRL-ALT-DEL
  89. FOR WINDOWS: ATL-F4   
  90.  
  91. When everything fails, use CTRL-ALT-DEL keys.  DON'T use reset button
  92. when running WINDOWS, you may damage the hard disk.
  93.  
  94. 9.  Some games run fine under certain DOS version like DOS 5.0 and do
  95. not run under 6.0 or later.
  96. Suggestion:  Make sure you have this line "DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE" 
  97. in your CONFIG.SYS.  Then run SETVER to set the game program to the 
  98. DOS version that it will operate.  For example, if GAME.EXE will run
  99. under DOS 5 and you are using DOS 6, run this command:
  100.         C:>SETVER GAME.EXE 5.0
  101.  
  102. You need to reboot system for the changes to be effective.
  103. Refer to DOS manual on SETVER if you have any questions.
  104.  
  105. 10.  Problem due to insufficient video memory and incorrect video 
  106. card driver. (Some games require you to choose a video driver, 
  107. some high-resolution games need more than 512k video RAM)
  108. Symptoms:  There's no picture on screen, but the hard disk sounds like
  109.            it is retrieving something.
  110.            Strange colors in pictures.
  111. Correction:  If you have another VGA card, try it to see if problem 
  112. persists. Find a VGA card with more memory. Choose a different video 
  113. driver to see if problem goes away.
  114.  
  115. 11.  Problem due to pointing devices such as mouse and joystick
  116. (Some games won't run without a mouse)
  117. Correction:  Load the mouse driver and install a mouse.  If the mouse
  118. is jumpy or erratic, check if the mouse driver load is the correct one.
  119. Also check if serial port and/or mouse is defective or not.
  120.  
  121. 12.  Problems due to incorrect sound drivers, program crashes or
  122. refuses to run.
  123. Correction:  If the program assumes you have a sound card installed
  124. and you have none, run the setup or install utility of the program,
  125. select PC speaker or none (no sound card).  Then the program won't
  126. look for a sound card when running.
  127. If you have a sound card and the program reports no sound card or
  128. incorrect driver, re-install your sound card driver that comes with
  129. the card; check if problem goes away; if not; run the setup or install
  130. utility of the program.

  132. MOST OF THE PROBLEMS THAT YOU RUN INTO WILL GO AWAY WHEN YOU COPY
  133. THE PROGRAM ONTO THE HARD DRIVE, IF NOT, ALSO RUN "SETUP", OR 
  134. "CONFIG" TYPE PROGRAM/ UTILITY TO CHANGE THE DEFAULT SETTING TO
  135. THE ONE THAT MATCH YOUR SYSTEM.

  137. If copying the game from CD-ROM to hard disk does not fix the
  138. problem, copy the ZIP files fo the game to hard disk, uncompress
  139. it using PKUNZIP or UNZIP, re-run INSTALL, CONFIG, or SETUP.
  140. Then the game should run fine.  Problems of this sort is caused
  141. by file names characters not allowed for ISO 9660 standard for
  142. CD-ROM.
